The history of the jumping events is
closely tied to the overall history of track and field. If Man was a
runner from “the earliest times”, He was also a jumper for the
same reasons. And within that history, there had been a gradual
evolution of each jumping event. In fact, evolution is the underlying
principle binding all jumping events together.
- Long Jump was first practiced in
the Ancient Olympic Games where it was a highly contested event.
Halteres (weight carried by jumpers on each hand) and music
were part of the action. The first one was used to propel the jumper
during flight and the second one provided rhythm during execution.
Today, Long Jump is practiced with a run-up and hand clapping is
sometimes used to provide rhythm.
- Triple Jump was popular in 19th century Ireland. And during the first Olympic
Games it was practiced using a hop + hop + jump style. Today, the
event is done with a run-up and a hop + step + jump style.
- High Jump has undergone some
interesting changes throughout the years. Beginning with the first
contest in the 19th century, this event has seen many
changes undertaken by athletes who constantly pushed themselves as
they created more efficient and innovative jumping techniques.
- The most important changes in the
Pole Vault were both technical and logistical. Like high jump,
vaulters constantly improved their techniques to reach new heights.
Engineering provided them with the poles to carry out their feats
